Waverly Special Education Advocate Megan Hunemuller Joins Right to Read Advocacy to Empower Iowa Families Who Seek Support for Their Dyslexic Children
Waverly, Iowa (Sept. 19th, 2024 ) – Waverly, Iowa resident Megan Hunemuller has joined Right to Read Advocacy, LLC, a specialized service that supports families and children through the journey of dyslexia diagnosis. As a member and special education advocate, Hunemuller will be providing special education advocacy services for families throughout the state.
“In joining Right to Read Advocacy, I was immediately connected with other advocates throughout the country who are also passionate about helping families that are on a similar journey with their dyslexic children.” Hunemuller said. “For me, it’s important to understand the country’s special education landscape and how best practices can help to shape our state’s future legislation.”
Hunemuller is a mom of four who dove into dyslexia research after recognizing multiple signs of the dyslexia in her then six-year-old daughter. Once her daughter received the dyslexia diagnosis, her local school district was not willing to provide appropriate reading intervention or accommodations that would allow her to access the general education curriculum. As a result, Hunemuller quickly learned how to advocate for her daughter and navigate the special education system.
“Over the past seven years, I have poured my energy into building long lasting and productive relationships with educators throughout Iowa,” Hunemuller said. “I am confident that its these collaborative efforts that will lead to better outcomes for our dyslexic students. My focus now is supporting other families through the special education process, so they don’t have to go through the same challenges that my family faced.”
Hunemuller serves on the Iowa Department of Education’s Dyslexia Board and as the secretary for Decoding Dyslexia Iowa. She is a member of the International Dyslexia Association as well as the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates. Locally, Hunemuller is a co-founder of the Waverly Area Dyslexic and Learning Support Group where she offers both group and one on one support to local community members. She has also completed the Dyslexia Training Institute’s Dyslexia Advocate Certificate Program.
