Megan Hunemuller

MEMBER & ADVOCATE

Megan Hunemuller is a mom of four who dove into dyslexia research after recognizing multiple signs of the dyslexia in her then six-year-old daughter. At the time, she was told that her daughter wasn’t far enough behind to receive accommodations or intervention throughout the school day.  Once her daughter received the dyslexia diagnosis, the local district replied, “We’ve never had a student with dyslexia before, but it doesn’t change the way we approach her education.” The district’s response further fueled Megan’s research. She learned all she could about special education and how to provide appropriate intervention in the academic setting so that her daughter could access the general education curriculum like her peers.

Over the past seven years, Megan has worked hard at reigning in her ‘mama bear’ mentality and instead putting that energy towards building long lasting and productive relationships with educators throughout Iowa. Megan serves as the secretary for Decoding Dyslexia Iowa and is a member of the International Dyslexia Association as well as the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates. She has also completed the Dyslexia Training Institute’s Dyslexia Advocate Certificate Program. Megan is active in state legislative efforts to support dyslexic learners, serving on the Iowa Department of Education’s Dyslexia Board. Locally, Megan is a co-founder of the Waverly Area Dyslexic and Learning Support Group where she offers both group and one on one support to local community members.

When Megan was a student, she too had an Individualized Education Plan, and knowing what she knows now, she believes she is also dyslexic. Aside from her struggles in school, Megan obtained her Associates of Science degree along with her Mortuary Science degree. Regardless of profession, Megan’s passion has always been caring for others during difficult times. Her professional focus looks different now that she has witnessed the shortcomings of the special education system, not just in Iowa, but across the United States. She doesn’t want anyone else to have to go through what her family went through and wants to provide much needed access to professional advocacy support, because all students should receive the free and appropriate education they deserve.

In her rare free time, Megan enjoys playing games with her family, reading, listening to podcasts and scrapbooking. She lives in Waverly, Iowa with her family and their mini zoo. Megan looks forward to coming along side you as a partner in your child’s education.

“Over the past seven years, I have poured my energy into building long lasting and productive relationships with educators throughout Iowa. I am confident that its these collaborative efforts that will lead to better outcomes for our dyslexic students. My focus now is supporting other families through the special education process, so they don’t have to go through the same challenges that my family faced.” - Megan
